Intro to Programming Concepts

Elsevier 1600 John F Kennedy Boulevard , Philadelphia, PA (map)

Are you interested learning in the basics of how computers operate and how code works? Have you ever taken a programming class and given up because the concepts were too hard to grasp, or all the examples used math formulas and your walls went up? Or have you stayed away from programming all together, because you’re worried that’s what will happen? If you answered “Yes!” to even one of those questions, this class is for you!

In this workshop, we’ll explore some of the most basic and universal programming concepts. We’ll use everyday activities and real-life examples to demonstrate common structures such as If/Then/Else statements and different kinds of loops. We’ll also try to take the mystery out of variables, and we'll talk about why computers are so picky.

This will truly be an introductory class. If you’ve taken GDI’s Intro to Javascript or any equivalent classes and successfully completed the exercises, this class is not for you. If you’re a programmer by profession, this class is not for you.

Please bring your laptop. All you'll need installed is a web browser of your choice (e.g., Chrome)

Chrissy Chimi is an Application Developer at NRG. She works with C#, Python, PHP, many things AWS, and whatever else is handy to develop tech to support business processes (and sometimes just for fun). Chrissy took a non-traditional path to a career in tech and looks forward to supporting GDI students in their own journeys, whether tech-ward or tech-adjacent.

The building is located at the corner of JFK and 16th. The front of the building is on JFK but you actually want to go to the back of the building, which is in a little courtyard (Bank of America is on the corner).

Someone will likely be there to let you in before 6:45pm, but if you come after that, there are four doors - you want the regular door (not the revolving one) furthest to the right. When you arrive, if no one is at the door, press the buzzer and tell the security guard that you are here for the event at Elsevier (pronounced "Ell-severe"). They will ask you for your ID, have you sign in, and then will send you to the 18th floor. We'll take it from there! If you have any trouble, please feel free to contact me.

Refunds are offered only if the class is rescheduled/cancelled or in extreme circumstances. If you are no longer able to attend, please post your interest in selling your ticket in the comments. If you find a buyer, send a Meetup message to Jen with the name of the buyer. Do not change your RSVP in the Meetup event.

Unfortunately, GDI cannot offer a waitlist. If the class is full, please keep an eye on the comments to see if another student is interested in selling their ticket to you.

We aim to offer this class four times per year. Timing varies based on teacher and venue availability. Keep an eye on our Meetup page for future class announcements.
