Tonight's Topic: CRISPR, Gene Drives and Mosquitos
This will be a followup to a discussion on the CRISPR gene editing technology we did in June at SplatSpace. Some familiarity with CRISPR technology will be assumed, but we will give an overview. The focus will be on some of the real world applications being developed for this technology as well as the concept of a "Gene Drive" and how this, in conjunction with CRISPR technology, is being considered as a means to alter and/or eliminate entire populations/species of the mosquitos that cause malaria, yellow fever, zika, dengue fever and chikungunya. BYOM (bring your mosquitos) NOT!
