Teaching Alexa New Tricks with JavaScript

ShoreTel 1610 N. Second Street Suite 101, Milwaukee, WI 53212 (map)

Alexa, turn on the lights. Alexa, tell me the weather. Alexa may have become integrated into your daily life due to having many skills to choose from, but how can you make a skill for you and your home or purpose? We’ll go over how to create your first skill by using the Alexa Skills Kit and how to push it to AWS Lambda. We’ll also cover what is next for Alexa and the different APIs Amazon has released in preview. With the rise in sales of Amazon Echos and Dots over the holiday season, who doesn’t have one or two or even a few in their house. And who wouldn’t want to create some skills to personalize their Alexa, or just play a few tricks on the kids.

Dana Hart is a software engineer at Northwestern Mutual currently doing JavaScript development with React/Redux and Node.js. Her career started in the web world many years ago at UW Health by developing public and internal sites for the health care system. Her focus and passion for the web hasn’t changed one bit, if anything it has grown. In her spare time, she chases her kids around, enjoys a good baking challenge, and is currently looking into home automation tools and APIs with her husband.

Pre-meetup social hour is cancled.
