Denver Droids: Catching Kotlin

IBM 4700 South Syracuse Street, Room 533 , Denver, CO 80237 (map)

Catching Kotlin by Brandon Davis

Despite Google's work in the version of Java that is used in Android development, we may not be able to use newer language features in large scale apps for several years due to the slow crawl of Android OS updates. What if, as Android developers, we spent our time writing apps using a modern language that is consistently updated and is written by engineers who work on user-facing code, like us? I believe Kotlin has come to the rescue and can get us writing cleaner, more modern code with fewer bugs. In this talk, I will show what it takes to get Kotlin set up, go over its syntax, and demonstrate Android specific time saving features. In the end, I hope you catch the Kotlin bug that is taking the industry by storm.

About Brandon Davis

Brandon Davis (@xBrandonDavisx) is a Software Engineer at POSSIBLE Mobile, specializing in Android development. His interest in all things technology began early, with his ambition and passion for learning leading him from computer repair to game development to mobile apps. Working to share his knowledge and build the Android community, he is a co-organizer of the Denver Droids Meetup group.

About the Droids

Each 3rd Wednesday of the month, we meet at IBM in the DTC or at POSSIBLE Mobile downtown (quarterly). From 5:30-6pm we will socialize and enjoy food and drinks. At 6pm we will typically have a speaker giving a presentation about an interesting and informative Android development topic. If you are a new or experienced Android developer, or just someone that is curious about Android development, we hope you will join us and become a regular participant!
