Java: Functionally Speaking

Tech Elevator 7100 Euclid Ave., Suite 140 , Cleveland, OH (map)

Tech Elevator is pleased to host Rebecca Sullivan who will present Java lambdas, and other aspects of "functional" Java.

In Rebecca's own words:

It’s been over 4 years since the release of Java 8, but writing in a functional style in Java might still feel foreign to the best of us. In this presentation, we’ll take a high-level look at the major features introduced that allow us to seamlessly take advantage of the functional paradigm, weigh the pros and cons of applying a functional approach, and walk through a few live examples to illustrate key points.

Intended Audience:

If you have been working in a version prior to 8 and are craving some new tools, or if you are totally new to functional programming in Java, this is for you. If you’re looking for a refresher on functional Java, you can also get a lot out of the talk. If you are a seasoned developer who uses these tools all day long, then this will likely be too slow for you.

Presenter:

Hi, I’m Rebecca Sullivan. I’m a software developer at Publicis.Sapient (a.k.a. Rosetta), a digital marketing agency in downtown Cleveland, where I work on custom CMS implementations. Before that, I worked at Hyland as part of their Custom Solutions Group, where I built custom integrations with their product, OnBase. An Atlanta native, I came to Cleveland originally to pursue a music performance degree. After transitioning to a business degree and eventually a job in marketing, I made a few developer friends and found out that the technical side of marketing was way more interesting to me. I decided to attend Tech Elevator and am extremely happy I did. The rest is history, and I continue to enjoy meeting people in the Cleveland tech community.

Directions:

Tech Elevator is located inside the Baker Electric Building, Suite 140. Free parking will be available in the gated lot behind (south side) the building, accessible from East 71st Street.
